Contact UsWhat Is TMJ Therapy?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the spot where your jaw attaches to your skull, enabling you to open and close your jaw smoothly. Sometimes the joint gets injured or damaged, causing a painful condition called temporomandibular joint disorder or dysfunction (TMD). If you're having pain or hearing noises whenever you move your jaw, then schedule an appointment with Dr. Gardy to see if you have TMD. At her practice, Junée F. Gardy DDS, PA in Naples, FL, she uses advanced methods, such as ultrasound treatments and BOTOX® injections to care for your TMD to alleviate pain. Your TMJ therapy will depend on the cause of your TMD and your specific condition.
How Does TMJ Therapy Work?
To help diagnose TMD, Dr. Gardy will discuss your concerns prior to performing a physical exam where she will evaluate the movement of your jaw and search for indicators of misalignment, teeth grinding, and jaw clenching. She may also palpate the jawbone and lower face for any tenderness and inflammation. Dr. Gardy might take digital x-rays of your lower face along with a bite analysis to search for underlying causes of TMD. Your TMJ therapy choices will depend on the findings of the exam. Ultrasound treatments can reduce the pain and swelling by using sound waves to increase blood flow circulation to the area to promote healing. BOTOX injections can reduce teeth grinding and alleviate pain by temporarily freezing the jaw muscles.

About UsTMJ Therapy FAQs
Where do you inject BOTOX for TMJ?
When you come into our Naples, FL office for BOTOX to treat TMJ, Dr. Junée F. Gardy will place multiple injections into different areas of your facial muscles. Where you receive the injections will depend on your symptoms, but primarily, the jaw muscles are targeted. This usually includes the masseter and temporalis muscles, which both aid in chewing. If you suffer from headaches as a result of TMJ, injections may also be administered into the muscles in your forehead and temples.
What happens if TMJ is left untreated?
Any symptoms you are experiencing from TMJ may only get worse if it's left untreated. While many times TMJ can resolve on its own, sometimes TMJ therapy is needed to improve your quality of life. Possible consequences of untreated TMJ include debilitating headaches or migraines, jaw joint damage, worn or cracked teeth from clenching and grinding, and tinnitus.
How long will my results from TMJ therapy last?
This will vary from patient to patient. Results from BOTOX injections typically last 3 – 4 months. According to scientific studies, results from ultrasound treatments have been thought to last about six months, but it may take multiple sessions.
