What to Expect from Periodontal Disease

To discover if gum disease is deteriorating your dental wellness, we will use a small tool to measure the gaps between your gums and teeth. If these pockets are bigger than three millimeters deep, it is usually a source of concern. If Dr. Gardy diagnoses you with periodontal disease, she will go over options for in-office treatment and advise you to increase how often you brush and floss to prevent bacteria from building up again. Regardless of what phase of periodontal disease you have, it's vital to schedule routine dental cleanings and develop good oral hygiene at home for maintenance so the disease won't worsen. If caught early, scaling and root planing (SRP) may be done to clean out the gum pockets. In more advanced cases, an antibiotic called ARESTIN® may be used with SRP treatments.
